Dr. Adame recommends daily turmeric to reduce inflammation in her patients with
✅ PANDAS/PANS
✅ Behavioral/mental health conditions
✅ Acne
✅ Metabolic syndrome/hyperlipidemia
✅ Joint pain
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and its primary active constituent curcumin have demonstrated therapeutic potential across multiple conditions, particularly those involving inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolic dysfunction. The most robust clinical evidence supports use in metabolic disorders and musculoskeletal conditions.
Conditions with Clinical Evidence
Metabolic and inflammatory disorders show the strongest support, including metabolic syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and hyperlipidemia.] Clinical trials have demonstrated beneficial effects on inflammatory markers (reducing CRP, TNF-α, and IL-6) and oxidative stress markers (improving total antioxidant capacity and reducing malondialdehyde).
Musculoskeletal conditions, particularly osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, represent another well-studied application, with evidence supporting anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
Other Investigated Uses
Clinical trials have examined turmeric/curcumin for:
Gastrointestinal disorders: ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcer
Dermatologic conditions: psoriasis, vitiligo, acne
Neurological disorders: Alzheimer's disease, depression, migraine
Cardiovascular conditions: atherosclerosis, acute coronary syndrome
Other conditions: polycystic ovarian syndrome, premenstrual syndrome, lupus nephritis, uveitis
Curcumin demonstrates anticoagulant effects, warranting caution in certain patients.
