Marshall County Prenatal Yoga Project

We are thrilled to announce a new series of free prenatal yoga and wellness classes, Marshall County Prenatal Yoga Project, aimed at supporting expectant mothers in our area. This project has been a labor of love collaboration between Lindsey Barts at Roots Yoga Fulton County, Culver Pediatrics Center, Marshall County Community Foundation, Marshall County Health Department, and LifePlex Fitness Forum.

Our mission at Culver Pediatrics is to transform the mind, body, spirit health of all children by educating families, communities, and schools.

Maternal wellness, especially nutritional status, at pre-conception has a multigenerational impact. Not only is the mother’s body and health affected by her nourishment, but the health of her baby, and the baby’s future baby’s are affected. The fetus has gametes forming in utero that are affected by maternal nourishment and state of health.

In short, the best time to make sure a child gets their healthiest start in life is before they are born through the health of the mother.

One of the most beneficial wellness practice I encourage is prenatal yoga—a gentle yet powerful tool to enhance pregnancy outcomes.

Prenatal yoga offers a variety of benefits, helping to reduce stress, improve sleep, increase flexibility, and build strength. These benefits are not just for the mother, but also positively impact the developing baby. By promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety, prenatal yoga helps lower the risk of preterm labor, supports healthy weight gain, and prepares the body for childbirth.

The physical benefits of prenatal yoga are well-documented, but it’s the emotional benefits that truly make a difference in the lives of mothers and their babies. These benefits include reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, improved sleep, and fostering a stronger connection with their baby, ultimately promoting overall maternal well-being.

For rural Indiana communities like ours, where critical access hospitals are closing their labor and delivery units, the need for accessible prenatal care is more pressing than ever.

The free prenatal yoga classes will be led by certified prenatal yoga instructor Katie McMullen at LifePlex Fitness Forum and focus on yoga poses specifically designed for pregnancy. Not only will they help alleviate common pregnancy discomforts such as back pain and swelling, but they will also provide an opportunity for mothers to connect with each other in a supportive, low-stress environment.

To deliver a holistic wellness framework, the yoga classes will be complemented by monthly educational sessions led by either me or Elaine Wakefield, a certified nurse midwife. These sessions will discuss a variety of holistic wellness topics for prenatal health, including nutrition on a budget, mindfulness, restorative sleep, self-advocacy, fetal development, common pregnancy problems, and more!

Transportation and childcare will be provided. We want to make this resource as accessible as possible for expectant mothers in our community.

As rural Indiana faces challenges with healthcare access, programs like these are essential to fill the gap, ensuring that every mother has the resources she needs to give her child the best possible start in life.

I encourage all expectant mothers to join these classes, take part in a practice that nurtures mind, body, and spirit health, and improve their pregnancy outcomes.

Let’s come together as a community to support one another on this incredible journey
