Sure, there are lots of membership benefits to be part of the Culver Pediatrics family, like seeing the doctor while wearing pajamas and never having to sit through an after-hours answering service phone tree if your child gets sick in the middle of the night. A lesser known benefit is no cost and low-cost labs for practice members.
No-cost labs include what are known as “point of care” tests. These are tests I can collect, perform, and obtain results in-house myself without having to send the specimen to an outside laboratory. All of these tests are resulted out in less than 20 minutes. The cost of these tests is covered by monthly membership fees.
Our list of No-Cost Labs includes:
HEMOGLOBIN (finger stick)
PREGNANCY URINE STRIP
GLUCOSE (finger stick)
MONO SPOT (finger stick)
RAPID STREP (throat swab)
URINALYSIS TEST STRIP 10SG (Urine)
DRUG SCREEN SAFECUP 12 PANEL (urine)
COVID-19 IgG/IgM Antibody Test (finger stick) **We offer this for the entire household**
LEAD SCREEN (finger stick)
RAPID FLU (nasal swab) GUAIAC (stool smear test for occult blood)
COMING SOON: Rapid COVID19 Antigen Testing In the meantime, we can order this as an outside lab. COVID19 molecular tests are covered by the CARES Act.
We also offer low cost “send out” labs. These are labs that I can either collect in-house but they have to be processed by an outside laboratory for results (example: urine culture) or the patient has to go to the outside laboratory to get the specimen collected (example: venous blood draws). If you choose not to use your insurance for these labs, or if you have a high deductible plan or no insurance, some of these lab prices are surprisingly affordable. We have partnered with Lab Corp to be able to provide this low-cost service to our patients. They have locations throughout South Bend and Mishawaka.
For example, let’s say that you think your child may have a UTI. The urinalysis I do in-house will not accrue charges on your Culver Pediatrics account. If the urinalysis in-house shows markers of infection, I send the urine sample to Lab Corp for processing a confirmatory culture. I call you with the results within 72 hours, once the results are in my inbox, and we discuss next steps. The cost of a routine urine culture is $15 if you don’t use your insurance. Instead of billing your insurance, Lab Corp bills me, and I add the charge to your monthly membership invoice.

Aerobic/Anaerobic Bacterial Gram Stain and Culture $50
