Well, not really. On Thursday, after waiting for months (since July to be exact!) we finally got our rapid antigen COVID19 test kits!!!

I am excited to be able to provide this service to our patients at no additional cost. As a full service boutique clinic, we pride ourselves in providing as many services in house for the convenience of our families. Please note, we are a tiny, family-owned, concierge practice. We order all of our tests in small quantities, so this service is ONLY available to children who are enrolled patients at Culver Pediatrics Center.

As a CLIA moderate complexity and COLA-accredited laboratory, we take transparency seriously. Our test is the BD Veritor Rapid Antigen test. This is not a molecular or PCR test. The specificity (how well you can trust a positive result) is 100%. The sensitivity (how well you can trust a negative result) is about 85%. If you need a fairly accurate result, such as to return to school in the face of presence of symptoms, we will do two separate tests 24 hours apart to increase accuracy.

One of the upsides of our test is that it does not require a deep nasopharyngeal (think, brain biopsy!) swab. I only need to swab about halfway up the nose and swirl the swab 5 times in each nostril to collect the sample.

The test results take about 15 minutes to process. If I do the swab in the clinic driveway, you will likely have the results by the time you drive home.

Who needs a COVID19 test? Any child with symptoms such as fever or cough or sore throat should get tested as part of their general work up. If a child is exposed to someone who had a confirmed positive test, they should get tested, even if they don’t have symptoms. Some surgical centers are requiring testing before any elective procedure. We can take care of that for you.

With how long it took to get the kits, I have to be supremely judicious with utilization of my test supply. I will only test enrolled patients. If you are a parent however, I can help you if you need COVID testing. I can collect an anterior (shallow) nasal swab in the clinic (or on your front porch!) and I will send it to Lab Corp for processing. Lab Corp bills your insurance, and most plans cover COVID19 testing as part of the CARES act. If there are any billing issues, you can discuss them with your insurance company and Lab Corp. The cost of the test with no insurance coverage is about $110.  And we still offer COVID19 antibodies testing for the entire household at no additional cost, including the parents.

If your child is a member of Culver Pediatrics Center and needs a COVID test, text us to schedule an appointment. If your child is not yet part of the Culver Pediatrics family, sign up in the email opt-in below to learn more about our boutique pediatric services.
