Iron, Pre-Conception Wellness, and Baby’s Health

Listen to Dr. Adame talk about #Iron, #PreConceptionHealth, Pregnancy, and Baby Health

Iron is an important micronutrient that carries oxygen in the blood to all organs. It carries oxygen to the fetus and placenta during pregnancy

Low iron (Anemia) is one of the most common micronutrient deficiencies in pregnancy

Anemia in pregnancy increases risk of pre-term birth and low birth weight,

Non-Heme iron from plant-based foods is a healthier source of iron than heme-iron from animal products

I recommend nourishment with whole, minimally processed, plant-foods to prevent micronutrient deficiencies including Iron before conception and during pregnancy

Broccoli, lentils, peas and beans (kidney, black, garbanzo, lima, pinto), spinach, and kale are excellent sources of non-heme iron

Iron is best absorbed when consumed with vitamin C-containing foods such as strawberries, oranges, raw tomatoes, and peppers.

Because of increased iron needs during pregnancy, people who become pregnant will need a non-heme iron supplement.
