Treating Your Child’s Runny Nose and Cough

Cold and flu season is right around the corner. We are soft launching our Get Healthy With Dr. Adame Program with tips on how to stay healthy during cold and flu season, including recipes such as ginger shot which can help clear the sinuses!

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, our children (and we!) still get sick with acute upper respiratory infections.

Most respiratory infections do not need antibiotics. These are some warning signs that the illness may have progressed to a complication such as an ear infection or sinus infection that may treatment beyond supportive care.

  • After a few days with normal body temperature, the fever returns (or the child develops a new fever a few days into the illness)

  • Ear pain

  • Post nasal drainage that lasts more than a week

  • New onset headache or facial pressure

  • Labored breathing (cannot get enough air into lungs, even with breathing through the mouth, tugging at belly muscles to breathe, head bobs up and down when they breathe)

  • Child deteriorates after their symptoms seemed to improve

  • Symptoms last more than one week and do not seem to get better

Call your doctor (or text Dr. Adame if you are part of the Culver Peds family) if you have any questions about your child’s respiratory illness.
